I Tried The Most Popular Oreo Flavors And The Winner Was A Surprise

Oreo flavors lined up for a taste test to find the best Oreo flavor

Oreo is not just a cookie anymore. It is practically its own universe. A universe that I, as well as millions of others, like to live in.  What started in 1912 as a simple chocolate sandwich cookie created by Nabisco has evolved into one of the most aggressive flavor machines in the snack food industry. The original Oreo still sits at the center of it all, and for a lot of us who grew up with these cookies, that classic version remains one of the defining supermarket snacks of all time. But Oreo stopped being just “the original” a long time ago.

Over the years, the brand has transformed itself into something closer to a rotating concert tour of flavors, collaborations, seasonal releases, celebrity tie-ins, and limited editions that appear on shelves, explode on social media, and then suddenly disappear before you even get a second package. That unpredictability is a huge part of why people follow Oreo releases the way music fans follow album drops. You never know what is coming next, and you never know which flavor will become the one everybody talks about.

Some of those limited releases have been incredible. The Selena Gomez Oreo collaboration was one of the best-tasting Oreo cookies I have ever had, a horchata-inspired flavor with chocolate and cinnamon creme that somehow felt both creative and completely natural within the Oreo world. The Post Malone Oreo was another one that absolutely delivered, combining salted caramel and shortbread-flavored creme between different cookie wafers in a way that felt unusual at first but completely worked once you tasted it. I liked that one even better than the Selena Gomez Oreo, which I really loved.

The problem is that Oreo treats many of these flavors like a summer blockbuster movie. They come out with huge hype, people rush to stores to find them, social media lights up with reviews and reactions, and then they are gone. Sometimes they come back years later, sometimes they never return at all. That is why if you see an Oreo flavor that catches your eye, especially one people are talking about, it is probably smart to grab it while you can because there is no guarantee it will still be there a month later. Oreo has built an entire culture around limited-time flavors and rotating releases, bringing back some fan favorites while quietly retiring others.

That constant experimentation is part of what keeps the brand alive after more than one hundred years. Oreo understands that nostalgia matters, but they also understand that people get excited by surprise. One month, it is a celebrity collaboration, the next month it is a birthday cake variation, then suddenly a flavor inspired by cotton candy, churros, peanut butter, or some completely unexpected combination shows up in stores. Some are gimmicks. Some are fantastic. Some make you wonder what they were thinking. But that is what makes an Oreo taste test so much fun.

For this ranking, I pulled together a lineup of Oreo flavors that are currently available or widely circulating and put them head-to-head to find out which ones actually hold up when you sit down and really taste them side by side. Some flavors build beautifully on the Oreo foundation, while others lean too hard into sweetness or novelty. One thing became clear very quickly though, there is a huge difference between an Oreo flavor that sounds interesting and one that actually works once you take that first bite.

#10 – Lemon Oreo – Score 4.0

The Lemon Oreo finished dead last in this taste test, and it was not because the cookie was terrible. It simply felt disconnected from what people expect an Oreo to be. Using the Golden Oreo cookie as the base already changes the snack’s personality completely, and adding the lemon cream pushes it even further into dessert-cookie territory rather than traditional Oreo territory.

There was a strange push-and-pull with this one. One bite made the lemon flavor seem refreshing, while the next made it feel like it belonged in a completely different style of cookie. The reaction during the taste test summed it up perfectly: a genuine love-hate relationship. The flavor profile just never fully came together, resulting in the lowest score in the entire ranking at 4.0.

#9 – Golden Oreo – Score 5.0

Golden Oreos have been around long enough to become one of the brand’s most recognizable alternate flavors, but this cookie still creates a strong split among Oreo fans. The vanilla-style cookie completely changes the snack’s identity, replacing the darker cocoa flavor that made the original Oreo famous.

The biggest takeaway during the test was how dramatically different this tasted from the original. It almost feels like an entirely different cookie brand. People who love sweeter vanilla cookies may rank this much higher, but in this contest, the Golden Oreo simply could not compete with the richer and more creative flavors later in the lineup, earning a score of 5.0.

#8 – Chocolate Oreo – Score 6.0

Chocolate meeting more chocolate sounds like a guaranteed victory, but the Chocolate Oreo ended up landing in the middle of the pack with a score of 6.0. The extra chocolate cream definitely added richness, but it also removed some of the balance that makes the original Oreo work so well.

The vanilla cream in the classic Oreo creates contrast against the darker cookie shell. Replacing that with chocolate cream creates a heavier overall flavor. Still, this one had a smooth texture and enough cocoa flavor to stay competitive. It easily outperformed the lemon and golden versions.

#7 – Dark Chocolate Oreo – Score 6.5

This was the first real surprise of the taste test. The Dark Chocolate Oreo delivered a much stronger and more aggressive chocolate flavor than the standard Chocolate Oreo. Instead of blending into the cookie, the cream finally stood out and asserted itself.

For serious chocolate fans, this one is dangerous. The darker cream flavor gave the cookie more identity and more depth. The richness immediately separated it from the earlier flavors in the lineup. It was also the first Oreo during the test that felt like it had the potential to challenge the original cookie, earning a solid 6.5.

#6 – Original Oreo – Score 8.0

The original Oreo remains the measuring stick for the entire brand. The chocolate cookie paired with the vanilla cream still delivers one of the most recognizable snack flavors ever created. Opening that first cookie immediately set the tone for the entire ranking.

What became fascinating during this test was watching newer flavors slowly chip away at the original Oreo’s dominance. The classic cookie scored a strong 8.0 early in the competition, but several newer creations eventually overtook it. That says a lot about how aggressive Oreo has become with flavor innovation over the years.

#5 – Mint Oreo – Score 8.25

Everything changed once the Mint Oreo package opened.

The smell hit immediately before the first bite even happened. Suddenly the entire competition felt different. The mint flavor exploded through the cookie without overpowering it, creating one of the cleanest and freshest Oreo experiences of the entire test.

This was the first Oreo that genuinely threatened the original cookie’s legacy. The mint cream blended perfectly with the chocolate cookie shell, creating something that felt familiar while still adding a dramatic twist. It took over first place immediately during the tasting and finished with an impressive score of 8.25.

#4 – Birthday Cake Oreo – Score 8.7

Birthday Cake Oreo felt like Oreo taking the original formula and pushing it directly into full dessert mode. The sweetness increased instantly, but the flavor still managed to stay playful and balanced.

The little sprinkles inside the cream added texture and visual appeal, while the birthday cake flavor itself delivered exactly what people expect from the name. This cookie tasted fun. That was the biggest strength here. It captured the feeling of eating birthday cake frosting while still maintaining enough Oreo identity to feel connected to the brand. It surged into first place at the time with a strong score of 8.7.

#3 – Oreo Reese’s – Score 9.0

The moment Reese’s entered the competition, everything felt dangerous.

The peanut butter flavor completely dominated the cookie in the best possible way. There was no confusion about what this was supposed to taste like. It delivered an unmistakable Reese’s flavor immediately while still allowing the Oreo cookie to remain present underneath.

This was one of the easiest flavors to identify in the entire test because the peanut butter hit instantly. The combination of Oreo chocolate cookie and Reese’s flavoring created one of the richest and most addictive cookies in the entire lineup. For a while, this looked unbeatable and stormed into first place with a huge score of 9.0.

#2 – Oreo S’mores – Score 9.1

By the time Oreo S’mores appeared near the end of the test, the rankings had already become chaotic. This flavor used a graham style cookie instead of the traditional chocolate shell, instantly creating a completely different texture and flavor experience.

What made this cookie fascinating was the delayed reaction. The flavor did not explode immediately like Mint Oreo or Reese’s Oreo. Instead, it slowly built after each bite. The marshmallow style cream and chocolate combination gradually crept up and became more addictive the longer it sat on the palate.

This came incredibly close to winning the entire contest and finished with an outstanding score of 9.1.

#1 – Cookie Dough Oreo – Score 9.2

Nobody saw this coming.

Cookie Dough Oreo slowly built momentum during the tasting and then completely stole the show during the comparison round against Reese’s Oreo. Unlike Reese’s, which attacked immediately with bold peanut butter flavor, Cookie Dough Oreo played a slower game. The sweetness crept in gradually, creating a softer and more layered flavor experience.

What separated Cookie Dough Oreo from the rest of the field was balance. It delivered sweetness, creaminess, texture, and nostalgia all at once without becoming overwhelming. Every bite seemed to reveal something slightly different.

By the end of the test, Cookie Dough Oreo officially pulled off the upset victory and walked away with the highest score of the night at 9.2.

Final Thoughts

One of the biggest surprises from this Oreo ranking was watching the original Oreo fall so far behind some of the newer creations. Mint Oreo, Reese’s Oreo, Cookie Dough Oreo, and Oreo S’mores all brought something unique to the table while still respecting the core Oreo identity.

Cookie Dough Oreo winning the entire contest was completely unexpected, but that is exactly why doing these taste tests live makes them so much fun. There is no planning the reactions. Sometimes a flavor you expect to dominate gets overtaken by something you barely thought about walking into the test.

And honestly, that is exactly what happened here.

Check out the complete live Oreo taste test video below, where every flavor was scored in real time.

Watching these rankings unfold live turned into much more of a roller coaster than I expected. Some flavors started strong and faded quickly, while others slowly built momentum after a second bite. One thing became clear very early in the test, the classic original Oreo was suddenly fighting for survival against some seriously dangerous competition.
