Some snack cakes are built on nostalgia, others on flavor, and sometimes the two don’t line up the way you expect.
This was a tough one to get through, and not for the reasons you might expect. Tastykake has always been positioned as an affordable, easy-to-find snack. You can grab them at Walmart, convenience stores, supermarkets, just about anywhere. The price point is low, and that accessibility matters because not everyone is looking to spend top dollar on premium baked goods.
But that low price shows up immediately once you start tasting them. Across the board, these cakes lacked freshness and, more importantly, lacked real flavor. There is a difference between simple and underwhelming, and too many of these fell into that second category.
That does not mean there is no place for a brand like this. Budget snacks matter. Not everyone is buying high-end bakery items, and there is value in having something inexpensive and easy to grab. But this is an honest review, and when something does not deliver, that has to be said. If you watch the video below after reading this, you will see that honesty come through right away.
A Brief History of Tastykake
Tastykake dates back to 1914 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded by Philip Baur and Herbert Morris. Originally known as the Tasty Baking Company, the brand built its reputation on fresh, affordable baked goods that could be distributed quickly throughout the region.
Over time, Tastykake became a staple across the Mid-Atlantic, especially in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Products like Krimpets and their cupcake line became part of everyday life for generations.
Today, the brand is owned by Flowers Foods, and while distribution has expanded, the identity has stayed the same. Tastykake is not trying to be premium. It is built around accessibility and low cost. That context matters when evaluating how these products perform.
The Taste Test and Rankings
Each product was judged on flavor, texture, and overall balance. The goal was not perfection, but there still needs to be enough flavor and quality to make it enjoyable.
Powdered Mini Donuts
These opened the test on a relatively stable note. There is a light sweetness from the powdered sugar coating, and the texture is exactly what you expect from a packaged mini donut, slightly dry but soft enough to get through.
They are not offensive, but they are also not memorable. There is very little depth to the flavor, and once you finish a bite, there is nothing pulling you back for another. Compared to what came later, though, these held up better than expected.
Score: 4 out of 10
Coffee Cake Cupcakes
This is where things started to slip. Despite the name, these do not deliver the kind of flavor you expect from a coffee cake. There is no richness, no cinnamon depth, and very little sweetness that stands out.
They come two in a pack, but presentation does not make up for the lack of flavor. Each bite feels flat, and there is nothing in the texture or taste that elevates it beyond a basic snack cake.
Score: 3 out of 10
Buttercream Cupcakes
These looked promising coming out of the package, but that ended immediately after the first bite. The buttercream filling has an artificial taste that does not resemble real buttercream at all.
There is no balance here. The sweetness is off, the texture is not pleasant, and the overall experience is difficult to get through. This was one of the lowest points in the entire test.
Score: 1 out of 10
Chocolate Cupcakes
This was the breaking point. The chocolate coating is overpowering in the worst way, leaving a heavy, artificial aftertaste that lingers far too long.
It is not just that the flavor is strong, it is that it is unpleasant. There is no balance, no sweetness underneath to counter it, just a harsh coating that makes it difficult to continue eating.
Score: 0 out of 10
Honey Buns
This is where things finally turned around. The honey buns delivered a noticeable improvement in both flavor and texture. The icing adds a level of sweetness that actually works, and the overall bite feels more complete.
There is still nothing here that would be considered exceptional, but compared to everything else, this stood out clearly. It was the only product that felt somewhat balanced from start to finish.
Score: 6 out of 10
Krimpets Sponge Cake with Butterscotch Icing
There is a recognizable concept here, but it does not come together the way it should. The butterscotch flavor is present, but it is paired with a strange aftertaste that takes away from the experience.
Instead of feeling like a classic snack, it feels uneven. The texture is fine, but the flavor profile does not quite land.
Score: 2 out of 10
Chocolate Juniors
At first, this felt like it might challenge for the top spot. The size is impressive, and the initial bite gives you some hope that it might deliver.
But that same chocolate flavor from the earlier cupcakes comes back. It builds as you continue eating, and once it does, it drags the entire experience down. It starts strong but cannot hold it.
Score: 5 out of 10
Final Ranking and Comparison
- Honey Buns – 6
- Chocolate Juniors – 5
- Powdered Mini Donuts – 4
- Coffee Cake Cupcakes – 3
- Krimpets – 2
- Buttercream Cupcakes – 1
- Chocolate Cupcakes – 0
Here’s a quick breakdown of how each Tastykake snack performed:
Tastykake Flavor Comparison Table
| Rank | Product | Score | Flavor Strength | Texture | Overall Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Honey Buns | 6 | Moderate | Soft, balanced | Best overall, most enjoyable |
| 2 | Chocolate Juniors | 5 | Inconsistent | Dense | Strong start, fades quickly |
| 3 | Powdered Mini Donuts | 4 | Light | Dry, typical | Not bad, but forgettable |
| 4 | Coffee Cake Cupcakes | 3 | Weak | Soft | Lacks flavor |
| 5 | Krimpets | 2 | Off balance | Spongy | Strange aftertaste |
| 6 | Buttercream Cupcakes | 1 | Very weak | Artificial | Poor flavor overall |
| 7 | Chocolate Cupcakes | 0 | Overpowering | Heavy | Worst of the group |
The comparison table makes the results clear at a glance. While Honey Buns came out on top, the overall scores show that most of these Tastykake products struggled to deliver strong flavor and consistency. The gap between the top and bottom entries highlights just how uneven the lineup was in this taste test.
The Winner
Honey Buns take the top spot.
Not because they were exceptional, but because they were the only product that delivered a somewhat balanced experience from start to finish.

Closing
This was one of those taste tests where expectations and reality did not line up. Tastykake remains affordable and widely available, but when judged strictly on flavor, most of these products fell short.
That honesty is what this process is all about.
