Best Snack Pack Pudding Flavors Ranked

Snack Pack pudding cups ranked from worst to best including chocolate, banana cream pie, chocolate vanilla swirl, and tapioca

There was a time when almost every kid who brought lunch to school had one of these sitting inside their lunchbox. Snack Pack pudding cups have been part of American grocery store culture for generations, becoming one of the cheapest and easiest sweet snacks families could buy. Long before gourmet puddings and refrigerated dessert aisles took over supermarket shelves, Snack Pack carved out its place as the dependable, budget-friendly pudding cup that somehow always seemed to be sitting in somebody’s pantry or refrigerator.

One of the biggest reasons Snack Pack became such a household name was convenience. Unlike many refrigerated desserts, these pudding cups do not need to stay cold before opening. Parents could throw them into lunch bags, keep stacks of them in kitchen cabinets, or grab them quickly at dollar stores and supermarkets without worrying about refrigeration. For families trying to stretch grocery budgets, Snack Pack became one of those affordable comfort snacks that always felt easy to justify buying.

The brand itself dates back to the Hunt’s food company, which helped turn Snack Pack into one of the most recognizable pudding brands in America. Over the years, the line expanded to include multiple flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, banana cream pie, tapioca, butterscotch, and the famous chocolate-vanilla swirl combinations that many kids grew up eating after school.

That is exactly why this taste test felt worth doing.

I wanted to figure out which Snack Pack pudding flavor actually tastes the best today. Some of these flavors immediately brought back childhood memories, while others turned into complete surprises during the live ranking. One flavor completely collapsed during the test, another massively overperformed expectations, and one unlikely pudding flavor walked away with the championship.

Before we get into the full rankings, check out the live Snack Pack pudding taste test video below, where every flavor was reviewed and scored in real time for RockinFoodie.com.

What made this ranking especially interesting was how affordable these puddings still are. The entire four-pack cost only $1.25 at the dollar store. In a world where snack prices continue climbing higher every year, there is still something refreshing about finding a dessert that remains cheap, convenient, easy to store, and enjoyable to eat.

#4 – Chocolate Vanilla Swirl – Score 0.0

This was the shocker of the entire taste test, and not in a good way.

On paper, combining chocolate and vanilla pudding sounds like an easy win. The packaging even promises “a spoonful of yum,” which honestly raised expectations heading into the tasting. But the second this pudding hit the spoon, something immediately felt off. Even after trying to swirl the flavors together manually, the texture and flavor combination never really connected.

Then came the moment that completely sank the pudding. There was a strange smell and aftertaste that instantly brought to mind the smell of tires, which obviously is not what anybody wants from pudding. That reaction happened immediately during the live tasting and completely derailed this flavor’s chances. The combination simply did not work, resulting in the only zero score of the entire competition.

#3 – Chocolate Snack Pack – Score 4.0

Chocolate pudding is the flavor most people probably associate with Snack Pack first. It is the classic lunchbox pudding cup, the one generations of kids peeled open after sandwiches and potato chips during school lunch.

The first impression here was that the chocolate flavor was actually richer than expected. It definitely tasted chocolatey enough to satisfy a quick dessert craving, especially considering how inexpensive these pudding cups are. Still, the texture and flavor lacked the creaminess and depth you would get from a higher-quality refrigerated pudding.

At only $1.25 for a four-pack, though, it is hard to complain too much. That affordability matters because Snack Pack was never trying to compete with gourmet desserts. It was designed to be cheap, convenient, easy to pack into lunches, and shelf-stable enough to sit in the pantry waiting for snack time.

#2 – Banana Cream Pie – Score 6.0

Banana Cream Pie entered the competition with high expectations. Even visually, it looked more interesting than the earlier flavors because you could clearly see the banana pudding and cream blend layered inside the cup.

The banana flavor itself actually worked pretty well. It tasted sweet, smooth, and recognizable without becoming an artificial overload. The biggest issue was that the “cream pie” part never really arrived. The banana flavor dominated almost everything in the pudding cup, making it feel more like simple banana pudding than an actual banana cream pie.

Still, compared to the chocolate flavors, this one felt fresher and more enjoyable overall. The stronger fruit flavor gave it more personality, helping it comfortably slide into second place.

#1 – Tapioca – Score 7.0

Nobody expected tapioca pudding to walk away with the championship.

In fact, there was obvious hesitation going into the tasting. Tapioca can be hit or miss for a lot of people because of the texture alone, and there was real uncertainty about how well a cheap, shelf-stable pudding company could pull this off.

But the second bite changed everything.

The texture was surprisingly satisfying, the flavor felt balanced, and somehow it ended up tasting more complete than every other pudding in the lineup. It was not the greatest tapioca pudding ever made, but against the rest of the Snack Pack competition, it clearly stood above the field.

What made the victory even more surprising was how badly the chocolate vanilla swirl collapsed earlier in the rankings. At that point, it almost felt like the contest was going sideways. Then, suddenly, tapioca showed up late and completely stabilized the entire taste test.

It was the underdog winner nobody saw coming.

Final Thoughts

One reason Snack Pack still matters after all these years is that it fills a very specific role in American food culture. It is affordable, easy to store, simple to pack into lunches, and available almost everywhere, from supermarkets to dollar stores.

Not every flavor was successful in this ranking, but that almost made the contest more entertaining. The dramatic collapse of the chocolate vanilla swirl, the surprising strength of the tapioca pudding, and the nostalgic simplicity of the chocolate cups all made this feel like a genuine, live taste test rather than a predictable ranking.

And honestly, that is what makes these food battles fun.

Sometimes the flavor you least expect ends up walking away with the trophy.
