Few breakfast cereals have achieved the legendary status of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Introduced by General Mills in 1984, the cereal became a favorite among generations of cereal lovers thanks to its crispy square pieces coated with cinnamon and sugar. The formula sounds simple, yet countless competitors have spent decades trying to duplicate the cereal’s signature combination of sweetness, crunch, and cinnamon flavor.
That challenge has produced a crowded field of store-brand alternatives. Aldi’s Millville brand has earned a reputation for delivering impressive value; Wegmans continues to build one of the strongest private-label food lines in America; and Family Dollar’s Chestnut Hill brand offers shoppers another lower-priced alternative. We put all four cereals through a blind taste test to find out whether one of the challengers could finally knock the king off its throne.
The Story Behind These Four Brands
General Mills Cinnamon Toast Crunch remains the category leader and one of the most recognizable cereals on supermarket shelves. The cereal’s appeal comes from its balance of sweetness, cinnamon flavor, and crunchy texture. The tiny squares are made from whole grain wheat and rice, then coated with cinnamon and sugar to create the flavor profile that has made the cereal a breakfast staple for more than four decades.
Wegmans has developed a reputation for producing store-brand products that often rival national brands in quality. We have seen that firsthand in several RockinFoodie taste tests. Aldi’s Millville brand has built a loyal following among budget-conscious shoppers who frequently discover products that compete surprisingly well against more expensive competitors. Family Dollar’s Chestnut Hill line offers lower-cost alternatives to popular grocery products, although the prices are not always as low as shoppers might expect when compared to other discount retailers.

4. Millville Cinnamon Crunch Squares (Aldi)
The biggest surprise of the entire competition came from Aldi. Millville products have performed well in many previous taste tests, so expectations were fairly high heading into this one.
Unfortunately, this cereal never found its footing. The flavor lacked the freshness and sweetness found in the top contenders. While it was certainly edible, it simply did not deliver the same satisfying cinnamon flavor that made the other cereals stand out. Considering Aldi’s strong track record in previous comparisons, this fourth place finish was unexpected.
3. Chestnut Hill Cinnamon Crunch (Family Dollar)
Family Dollar’s entry finished ahead of Aldi but still fell well short of the leaders. The cereal lacked the freshness and sweetness that helped separate the top two cereals from the rest of the field.
This result was not entirely surprising. While Chestnut Hill products can occasionally deliver solid value, this particular cereal never felt like a serious threat to win the competition. It was acceptable, but not memorable.
2. Wegmans Cinnamon Squares
For much of the taste test, it looked like Wegmans might be headed for another upset victory. The cereal delivered excellent crunch, a strong cinnamon flavor, and plenty of sweetness. In fact, during the early rounds of tasting, it actually held the top position.
What makes this result especially impressive is the value. Wegmans once again proved that its private label products deserve to be taken seriously. The difference between this cereal and the winner was extremely small. If you are looking to save money without sacrificing much quality, Wegmans Cinnamon Squares is an outstanding option.
1. Cinnamon Toast Crunch (General Mills)
Sometimes the original remains the best.
General Mills Cinnamon Toast Crunch earned the top spot thanks to its superior balance of sweetness, cinnamon flavor, texture, and overall freshness. While Wegmans came remarkably close, the name-brand cereal pulled ahead during the final head-to-head comparison.
The cereal offered the most complete eating experience in the field. Every bite delivered the familiar flavor profile that has kept Cinnamon Toast Crunch at the top of the cereal world for decades. In a contest filled with capable challengers, the legend successfully defended its crown.
Final Ranking
- Millville Cinnamon Crunch Squares (Aldi)
- Chestnut Hill Cinnamon Crunch (Family Dollar)
- Wegmans Cinnamon Squares
- Cinnamon Toast Crunch (General Mills)
The Winner
Store brands have earned plenty of victories in previous RockinFoodie taste tests, and Wegmans nearly added another trophy to its collection. However, this was one of those rare occasions when the original product reminded everyone why it became famous in the first place.
General Mills Cinnamon Toast Crunch remains the gold standard for cinnamon-flavored breakfast cereal. Wegmans deserves tremendous credit for coming close, but in the end the king kept its crown.

The results produced one surprise, one disappointment, and a very close battle for first place.
