Some taste tests are easy because the differences jump right out at you. This wasn’t one of them. Raisin Bran may be one of America’s most popular cereals, but when we put four different brands side by side, the differences were surprisingly subtle. That made this one of the toughest cereal rankings we’ve ever done.
Raisin Bran has been a breakfast staple for generations. The combination of crunchy bran flakes and sweet raisins helped make it one of the most successful cereals ever created, inspiring countless competitors and store-brand versions. For this taste test, we compared offerings from Kellogg’s, Post, Aldi, and Family Dollar to see which one deserved a spot in our shopping cart.
Kellogg’s introduced Raisin Bran in 1926 and helped establish the cereal as a breakfast institution. The company’s version remains one of the most recognizable cereals in America.
Post entered the Raisin Bran market with its own version and has spent decades competing directly with Kellogg’s. While both cereals share similar ingredients, each company developed its own approach to flavor and texture.
Aldi’s Millville brand has become one of the retailer’s most popular private-label lines. The company has built a reputation for offering lower-priced alternatives that often compete surprisingly well against national brands.
Family Dollar’s Chestnut Hill label represents the discount-store approach to grocery shopping, providing budget-conscious shoppers with lower-cost alternatives to major cereal brands.
The Taste Test
To keep things fair, all four cereals were served in separate bowls and sampled with milk. The goal was simple: determine which cereal delivered the best overall eating experience based on flavor, texture, raisins, and value.
4. Chestnut Hill Raisin Bran (Family Dollar)
Score: 3/10
The discounted price was attractive, costing nearly half as much as some national brands. Unfortunately, the savings came with compromises. The raisins were noticeably smaller and lacked much flavor. The bran flakes also tasted less fresh than the competition.
While it wasn’t terrible, it simply couldn’t compete with the stronger offerings in this test.
3. Kellogg’s Raisin Bran
Score: 5/10
As the most famous name in the category, expectations were high. The cereal delivered a darker flavor profile than the others, but the raisins were smaller than expected and lacked sweetness. The bran flakes were acceptable but didn’t stand out.
Considering its reputation, this was the biggest surprise of the test.
2. Post Raisin Bran
Score: 6/10
Post edged out Kellogg’s in a very close battle. The raisins offered a slightly better flavor, and the overall cereal tasted a bit lighter and more balanced.
The differences between the two national brands were small, but they were enough to give Post the victory among the traditional Raisin Bran cereals.
1. Millville Raisin Bran with Granola (Aldi)
Score: 7/10
This entry came with a slight advantage because it wasn’t a traditional Raisin Bran. The addition of granola created a richer flavor and more interesting texture.
The flakes were lighter, the overall cereal was sweeter, and every bite delivered more flavor than the competition. It may not be a pure apples-to-apples comparison, but if the goal is finding the cereal that tastes best, Aldi’s Millville version was the clear winner.

Which Raisin Bran Would We Buy Again?
If you’re looking for a traditional Raisin Bran cereal, Post wins this contest. It offered the best balance of flavor among the three classic versions.
However, if the goal is simply finding the tastiest cereal in the group, Aldi’s Millville Raisin Bran with Granola takes the crown. It delivered more flavor, a better texture, and a lower price than the national brands.
Considering how close the competition was, this may be one of the most evenly matched cereal taste tests we’ve ever conducted.
I honestly thought this taste test would be easy. After all, how different could four boxes of Raisin Bran really be? Once I started tasting them side by side, however, I realized this was going to be a lot tougher than expected.
