Zero sugar sodas can be a polarizing subject among soft drink fans. Some people swear by them and believe they taste just as good as the originals. Others would rather stick with traditional diet sodas or simply drink the full sugar versions. There is definitely a difference between products labeled “diet” and those marketed as “zero sugar,” and some brands have been much more successful than others in closing the gap between the sugar-free version and the original.
For me, Dr Pepper has done a better job than almost anyone. In a recent RockinFoodie taste test comparing Diet Dr Pepper against several generic and store-brand alternatives, Dr Pepper Zero Sugar finished near the top of the rankings, second only to Mr. Pibb Zero. That got me wondering how the different Dr Pepper Zero Sugar flavors compared against one another. So I decided to put four of them head-to-head in a simple taste test. The good news is that there really wasn’t a bad soda in the bunch. As you’ll see in the video below, these were all surprisingly enjoyable drinks.
A Brief History Of Dr Pepper And Dr Pepper Zero Sugar
Dr Pepper traces its roots back to 1885, making it one of America’s oldest major soft drinks. The beverage was created by pharmacist Charles Alderton in Waco, Texas, and reached consumers one year before Coca-Cola entered the marketplace. Over the decades, Dr Pepper has built a loyal following thanks to its distinctive flavor profile, often described as a blend of multiple fruit and spice notes.
Today, Dr Pepper is owned by Keurig Dr Pepper, one of the largest beverage companies in North America. As consumer tastes shifted toward lower-calorie and sugar-free beverages, the company expanded beyond traditional Diet Dr Pepper and introduced the Zero Sugar lineup. Unlike many diet sodas that emphasize lighter flavor profiles, Dr Pepper Zero Sugar was designed to replicate the original soft drink’s taste as closely as possible. The success of the product led to the introduction of flavored varieties including Cream Soda, Blackberry, and Strawberries & Cream.
#4 Dr Pepper Zero Sugar Strawberries & Cream
Score: 7 Out Of 10
This was actually a very good soda.
The strawberry flavor comes through immediately, creating a sweet, dessert-like experience. The cream component adds smoothness and helps distinguish it from many fruit-flavored soft drinks.
The reason it landed in fourth place had nothing to do with the flavor itself. I noticed a more pronounced aftertaste compared to the other varieties. It was still enjoyable, but the lingering sweetness prevented it from climbing higher in the rankings.
#3 Original Dr Pepper Zero Sugar
Score: 8 Out Of 10
The original Dr Pepper Zero Sugar served as the baseline for this taste test.
This remains one of the best zero sugar sodas on the market. It captures much of what makes the classic Dr Pepper flavor so enjoyable while avoiding the artificial taste that sometimes affects sugar-free soft drinks.
While the flavored varieties added some extra excitement, the original remains a dependable and highly satisfying choice.
#2 Dr Pepper Blackberry Zero Sugar
Score: 10 Out Of 10
The Blackberry variety was one of the biggest surprises of the taste test.
The blackberry flavor blends naturally with the traditional Dr Pepper profile, creating a richer, fruitier experience without overwhelming the original soda. Every sip seemed to add another layer of flavor.
This was an easy 10 out of 10 and very nearly won the entire competition.
#1 Dr Pepper Cream Soda Zero Sugar
Score: 11 Out Of 10
Yes, I know the scale was supposed to stop at 10.
Sometimes a product forces you to break your own rules.
As a longtime cream soda fan, I was immediately drawn to this flavor. The cream soda notes blended beautifully with the familiar Dr Pepper flavor, creating a smooth and rich soft drink that never felt artificial.
What impressed me most was the lack of aftertaste. It delivered tremendous flavor while maintaining a clean finish. Out of all four sodas, this was the one I kept wanting to go back and taste again.
Final Ranking
- Dr Pepper Cream Soda Zero Sugar – 11/10
- Dr Pepper Blackberry Zero Sugar – 10/10
- Original Dr Pepper Zero Sugar – 8/10
- Dr Pepper Zero Sugar Strawberries & Cream – 7/10
The Winner
Dr Pepper Cream Soda Zero Sugar takes home the crown in this taste test. While all four sodas were enjoyable, the Cream Soda variety offered the perfect balance of sweetness, flavor, and drinkability. If you’re looking for the best Dr Pepper Zero Sugar flavor currently available, I’d recommend this one first.
