Cheez-It crackers are among the most popular cheese snacks you can buy, but can a cheap generic version actually match or even beat Cheez-It in flavor and value? In this taste test, I compared original and white cheddar Cheez-It crackers with a dollar-store generic brand to find out which one is actually worth your money. I am always looking for generic brands that can compete with or beat name brands because saving money matters, and it is even more interesting when the cheaper option actually tastes better.
That is what made this one so interesting. Cheez-It has been a go to snack for decades, and most people assume nothing is going to come close. But when you start putting these products side by side, things can change quickly. Sometimes the name brand wins easily, and sometimes the cheaper option surprises you in a way you did not expect.

Cheez-It crackers date back to 1921 when they were first introduced by the Green and Green Company in Dayton, Ohio. The product was later acquired by Sunshine Biscuits and eventually became part of the Kellogg Company. Over the years, Cheez-It built its reputation on a simple formula: baked cheese crackers made with real cheese, a distinct crunch, and a bold cheddar flavor that made them stand out from other snack crackers. That consistency is a big reason why Cheez-It remains one of the most recognizable snack brands on the shelf today.
Original Cheez-It vs Generic Cheese Crackers
Starting with the original cheddar flavor, Cheez-It made its case immediately. The texture was exactly what you expect: crisp, firm, and packed with that classic cheddar flavor. It has that signature taste that people recognize right away, and it still holds up.
The generic version was thinner and lighter. It was not terrible, especially for the price, but once you compare it directly to Cheez-It, the difference is obvious. The flavor just does not come close, and it lacks that sharp cheddar punch that makes the original stand out.
Final result: Cheez-It wins this round.
White Cheddar Cheez-It vs Generic White Cheddar
This is where things got interesting. The generic brand came out much stronger in the white cheddar category than it did in the original flavor.
At first, it did not seem like much, but as you kept eating it, the flavor started to build. It had a buttery quality and a smooth white cheddar taste that was actually very enjoyable. For a dollar store product, this was impressive.
Then going back to the Cheez-It version, the difference was noticeable. It was still good, but it lacked the same buttery depth as the generic version. This one flipped the script.
Final result, generic brand wins this round.
Final Result
In the original cheddar category, Cheez-It clearly came out on top. In the white cheddar category, the generic brand took the win.
That leaves this one as a tie.
Final Verdict
This is exactly why doing these comparisons matters. Going in, it feels like the name brand should dominate, especially one as established as Cheez-It. But when you break it down by flavor, the results tell a different story.
The biggest takeaway here is value. When a dollar store product can go head-to-head with a major brand and even win a category, that is a big deal. If the results are split, that means you have options, and you can save money without sacrificing too much quality.
