Little Debbie Nutty Buddy and Mrs. Freshley’s Buddy Bars are two of the most common peanut butter wafer snacks on store shelves, but once you try them side by side, the difference becomes obvious fast.
Peanut butter and chocolate are one of those combinations that feel like they should never fail. It is everywhere, candy bars, snack cakes, cookies, you name it. People have been hooked on that mix for decades. You go all the way back to the old Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup commercials, you got peanut butter in my chocolate, no, you got chocolate in my peanut butter, and that whole idea took off. Ever since then, it has been one of the safest bets in the snack world.
Or at least that is what you would think.
Because the truth is, not every peanut butter and chocolate combination works. Sometimes it hits, and sometimes it completely misses. That is what made this comparison interesting. I put two of the biggest names in this category head to head to see which one actually delivers.
Mrs. Freshley’s is known as a budget snack brand, commonly found in dollar stores and convenience stores across the country. The brand focuses on low cost packaged snacks, making it a popular option for quick and inexpensive treats.
On the other side, Little Debbie has been a major name in snack cakes since the 1960s. Based in Collegedale, Tennessee, the company built its reputation on consistency and recognizable products, including some of the country’s best-known snack cakes.
So with that in mind, it was time to find out which one actually deserves your money.
Mrs. Freshley’s Buddy Bars
Starting with Mrs. Freshley’s, this is the budget option. Eight bars in the box, about one dollar twenty five at the dollar store, and two bars per pack. On paper, it looks like a great deal.
But the first bite told the whole story.
There was almost no real flavor to speak of. The peanut butter was barely noticeable, and what was there did not taste right. The chocolate coating was harsh, almost unpleasant, and instead of working together, everything just felt off. This is one of those where you know right away it is not going to get better.
For something built around peanut butter and chocolate, this completely missed the mark.
Final score, 0 out of 10.
Little Debbie Nutty Buddy
Then came the Little Debbie Nutty Buddy, and it was not even close.
Right away, the difference was obvious. Strong peanut butter flavor, crisp wafers, and a chocolate coating that actually works with the rest of it. Everything you expect from this type of snack is here, and it delivers exactly the way it should.
The texture was fresh, the layers held up, and the overall balance between peanut butter and chocolate made this one easy to keep eating. Yes, it costs more, around three dollars and nineteen cents for the box, but once you taste it, the Little Debbie, you understand why.
This is how a peanut butter wafer bar is supposed to taste.
Final score, 8 out of 10.
Final Verdict
This was not a close competition.
Sometimes you expect a tight battle, especially when the products look so similar, but this one was decided almost immediately. Little Debbie Nutty Buddy delivered everything you want from a peanut butter and chocolate snack, while Mrs. Freshley’s Buddy Bars fell far short of that standard.
If you are deciding between the two, the answer is clear.
