Pepperidge Farm chocolate chip cookies have become one of the most recognizable premium cookie brands in American supermarkets, but which flavor is actually the best? For this RockinFoodie.com taste test, I lined up six different Pepperidge Farm chocolate chip cookie varieties and ranked them head-to-head. The lineup included three soft-baked cookies and three traditional Pepperidge Farm favorites, creating one of the most interesting cookie competitions I have done in a long time. The results were surprising, especially given the intense competition from brands such as Tate’s Bake Shop and other premium cookie makers vying for shelf space in supermarkets across America.
A Brief History Of Pepperidge Farm
Pepperidge Farm traces its roots back to 1937 when Margaret Rudkin began baking bread for her son, who suffered from food allergies. What started as a home baking project eventually grew into one of America’s most successful food companies. Over the decades, Pepperidge Farm expanded beyond bread into crackers, snacks, desserts, and cookies, building a reputation for products that often felt a little more premium than many competing supermarket brands.
One of the company’s smartest decisions was creating cookie lines named after places and destinations. Names such as Nantucket, Montauk, Newport, and Captiva give the products a distinct identity while helping them stand apart from generic supermarket offerings. Today, Pepperidge Farm remains one of the most respected names in packaged cookies.
Why Chocolate Chip Cookies Remain America’s Favorite Cookie
Chocolate chip cookies have held a special place in American kitchens for generations. Created during the 1930s, they quickly became one of the most popular cookies ever made. Their appeal comes from the balance of buttery dough and rich chocolate, a combination that works whether the cookie is homemade, bakery fresh, or packaged for supermarket shelves.
The challenge for any packaged cookie manufacturer is recreating that homemade experience. Some brands succeed better than others, and that is exactly what I wanted to find out with this Pepperidge Farm ranking.
My Video Review – This was fun to do
# 6 – Montauk Milk Chocolate Soft Baked Cookie
I started with Montauk, one of Pepperidge Farm’s soft baked offerings. I have never been a huge fan of soft baked packaged cookies because many of them share a similar flavor profile that I struggle to enjoy. The texture often feels artificial compared to traditional cookies.
Unfortunately, Montauk landed squarely in that category for me. The milk chocolate was pleasant enough, but the overall flavor carried the same soft-baked characteristics that I have noticed in competing brands. This one finished at the bottom of my rankings.
Score: 2/10
# 5 – Newport Dark Chocolate With Sea Salt
The Newport cookie represented a slight improvement over Montauk. The dark chocolate delivered a richer flavor, and the sea salt helped create some balance.
While the added salt and darker chocolate moved this cookie forward, it still suffered from the same soft baked characteristics that kept me from fully enjoying it. It was better than Montauk, but not enough to challenge the stronger entries later in the ranking.
Score: 3/10
# 4 – Captiva Dark Chocolate Soft Baked Cookie
Captiva was the surprise winner among the soft baked varieties. The use of a dark chocolate cookie base completely changed the experience.
This cookie avoided many of the issues I found with the previous two soft baked entries. The chocolate flavor was deeper, the texture worked better, and the large chocolate chips added extra richness. As far as packaged soft baked cookies go, this may be one of the better examples I have ever tasted.
Score: 5/10
# 3 – Dark Chocolate Pecan
Now we move into the traditional Pepperidge Farm cookies, and the difference was immediately noticeable.
The dark chocolate pecan cookie delivered a deep chocolate flavor that stood out right away. While the pecans were somewhat subtle, they added enough nuttiness to complement the chocolate without overwhelming it. This was a sophisticated cookie that felt much more premium than the soft baked offerings.
Score: 8.5/10
# 2 – Milk Chocolate Macadamia
This cookie came very close to taking the crown.
Macadamia nuts have always paired beautifully with chocolate, and Pepperidge Farm did an excellent job balancing those flavors. The nuts provided a buttery contrast to the sweetness of the chocolate chips, creating a cookie that was rich without becoming overpowering.
This was the first cookie in the lineup where I immediately felt that classic Pepperidge Farm cookie experience had arrived.
Score: 9/10
# 1 -Nantucket Double Chocolate
Nantucket Double Chocolate was the clear winner.
The cookie itself was darker, richer, and more complex than anything else in the lineup. The chocolate flavor appeared in both the cookie and the chips, creating layers of flavor that felt closer to something homemade than most packaged cookies ever achieve.
There was also a noticeable difference in texture. Everything about this cookie felt more complete. It delivered the strongest chocolate flavor, the best balance, and the most satisfying overall experience.
If you are standing in a supermarket trying to decide which Pepperidge Farm chocolate chip cookie to buy, Nantucket Double Chocolate is the one I would recommend first.
Score: 10/10

Final Thoughts
Pepperidge Farm continues to prove why it remains one of the most respected names in packaged cookies. While the soft baked line did not work particularly well for my tastes, the traditional cookie lineup was outstanding. Nantucket Double Chocolate delivered one of the best packaged cookie experiences I have had in a long time and earned its place at the top of this ranking.
