Whether the weather outside is too frightful for words or you simply have a craving for it, a good bowl of soup is always the ticket to cater to the soul. It also does a decent job of satisfying hunger. As a restaurant chain, Tim Hortons has a collection of fantastic meals in a bowl that keeps customers coming back for more. With over 5,000 locations worldwide, Tim’s has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a little coffee-and-donut shop in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Whether served on its own or paired up with a sandwich, Tim Hortons has some really good recipes that turn ordinary soup into something extraordinary.
Here are the top ten Tim Hortons soups that have established themselves as the best of the best:
#10 – Cream of Broccoli
As a soup, Cream of Broccoli is very popular. This is also the case with Tim Hortons whenever it appears on the menu board as the soup of the day. Made from chunks of broccoli, this creamy soup is a smooth favorite among customers who appreciate the cheesy flavor. If you’re expecting a thick soup, this isn’t it. At Tim Hortons, soups aren’t typically sold as an entree. It’s often sold as part of a combo with a sandwich or wrap from its lunch menu. This is the kind of soup that goes well with just about anything.
#9 – Butternut Squash
The Butternut Squash soup from Tim Hortons is popular enough to be sold in cans in grocery stores. It’s also popular enough to sell out quickly as a lunch menu item whenever it’s featured as one of its many locations’ soups of the day. The beauty of this soup is that it’s vegetarian-friendly but tasty enough for meat lovers to also order a bowl. It’s creamy but not too thick, making this easier to consume. Many restaurants make the mistake of having their butternut squash soups taste like a paste, but that’s not the case with Tim’s. Combined with the butternut squash, it’s a great balance of apples, carrots, onion, and potato, bathed in a mix of butter, cream, garlic, and spices. At home, sometimes I’ll substitute tomato soup for Tim’s Butternut Squash when cooking up a casserole. Should you have the opportunity to enjoy a bowl of butternut squash soup at Tim Hortons, chicken salad sandwiches tend to be a favorite to go with it.
#8 – Sweet Potato Bisque
Once upon a time, Tim Hortons introduced its Sweet Potato Bisque. This creamy soup was a wonderful twist to a potato soup that was truly out of this world. When it was discontinued, a petition was circulated by a group of disappointed customers who wanted that soup put back on the menu. All this drama took place in 2018, but so far Tim hasn’t decided to bring the soup back. Speaking as a customer who once had a bowl, I really enjoyed it. No, I didn’t sign the petition because I wasn’t aware there was one circulating until it was too late. I am among the many who would love to see this soup make a comeback. It went so well with the grilled ham and cheese sandwich I had.
#7 – Harvest Vegetable
For vegetarians, the Tim Hortons Harvest Vegetable soup takes it a step further by being vegan-friendly. Even if you’re not a vegetarian, this is a fully-loaded soup that rises to the occasion as a lunch menu favorite. Whether you’re actually watching your waistline or not, this is a great meal in a bowl that does well on its own or as a companion with a salad or sandwich. As one of Tim Hortons’ most popular soups, Harvest Vegetable is an aromatic blend of root veggies and seasonings that tastes just as good as it smells.
#6 – Spicy Thai Chicken Soup
If you’re not into spicy soup, the Spicy Thai Chicken Soup may not be for you. However, this is phenomenal as far as I’m concerned. I recall feeling a wee bit under the weather one particular lunch hour, and I was told to order this soup. For somebody who had no appetite at the time, I think I made record time when it came to devouring soup. The moment this was in my hands, my clogged sinuses opened up just enough to breathe in the aroma. From there, all bets were off, and the spoonfuls kept coming until there was nothing left to work with.
Unlike the discontinued Sweet Potato Bisque, Tim Hortons was kind enough to bring back the Spicy Thai Chicken Soup after some of us crazy customers pleaded for it. I really enjoy the mix of ingredients that went with that chicken. There were mushrooms, rice, red peppers, and a wonderful combination of seasoning that even included coconut. I remember the rest of my day after eating that soup, I was definitely feeling better. In all honesty, it did have some kick to it, but not overly so.
#5 – Creamy Field Mushroom
If you’re a fan of mushrooms, odds are you’ll like the Creamy Field Mushroom soup by Tim Hortons. The recipe combines button, porcini, and shiitake mushrooms with garlic powder, onion powder, and other spices. The velvety creaminess of this is awesome. I actually buy cans of this stuff from my local grocery store. However, while at a Tim Hortons, I rather enjoy pairing their mushroom soup with a toasted Roast Beef Craveable sandwich. The smoky flavor from the beef, plus the cheddar, really complements the field mushroom soup. The ciabatta bun also makes a great dipper. Go ahead, dunk a corner of that sandwich into this soup and find out for yourself. If you’d rather stick with something vegetarian, definitely go with the grilled cheese. You really can’t go wrong there.
#4 – Roasted Red Pepper and Gouda
The Roasted Red Pepper and Gouda from Tim Hortons doesn’t show up at every location but among the ones that have it on the menu, it’s a big favorite. Whether you’re vegetarian or not, this is a great soup to enjoy. It’s tomato-based and somewhat salty, but that’s where you counteract it with a delicious donut after slurping up the last spoonful. It’s also a fun soup to dip bread in, which Tim Hortons is more than happy to provide between its sandwich choices and other baked goods.
#3 – French Onion
When it comes to French Onion soup, I’m rather fussy about it. It needs to be done right or not at all. When I’m not making my own from scratch, Tim Hortons has to do. I love the four-cheese blend and the croutons Tim’s uses in their version of this classic. In all honesty, I much prefer eating this in-store than taking it on the road. For obvious reasons, I like the croutons to have a bit of texture to them before they turn to mush. My big kick has always been pairing up Tim’s French Onion soup with any of their roast beef sandwiches. It’s kind of the closest thing to a beef dip in that situation, and I have a blast dunking the sandwich into the soup.
#2 – Hearty Potato Bacon
As a soup, Hearty Potato Bacon from Tim Hortons is extremely popular with its customers. The blend of bacon, potato, and even carrots, with a perfect balance of seasonings, makes this a major favorite that keeps lunch-goers coming back for more. It’s a great dipper if you order a sandwich with it. It also pairs well with their fantastic salad bowls. The popularity of this soup has also led to it being sold in cans at grocery stores. As a former employee at a Tim Hortons location over twenty years ago, I can say the Hearty Potato Bacon was ordered by customers almost as often as the Homestyle Chili whenever it was featured as the soup of the day. As new soup flavors were introduced over the years, this particular soup remained a fan favorite, while some of the other classics had to make way.
#1 – Homestyle Chili
Okay, so chili isn’t exactly a soup, but it is mostly eaten the same way. The Homestyle Chili from Tim Hortons is so popular that many of its restaurants offer it every day. Although there are other variants, including Spicy Chili, the Homestyle Chili remains the best-selling meal in a bowl. Among all the bowled goodies Tim Hortons sells, it’s the Homestyle Chili that beats them all most of the time. Hearty enough as a meal on its own, it’s even better if you have toasty bread of some kind to go with it. If you don’t want to eat so heavily, go with a Craveable.
If you believe you have the room, chicken salad sandwiches are always the top choice among customers who want a full meal combo. As a former employee at a Tim Hortons location, I can say this was the most popular combo ordered from the restaurant’s lunch menu. The popularity of the Homestyle Chili is so great that it’s now sold in a can at grocery stores. It has the other varieties as well, but it’s the Homestyle Chili that consistently outdoes them all.
