Ring Dings vs Ding Dongs: Same Cake, Different Story
There are certain snack cakes that have been part of everyday life for decades, the kind you grab at a gas station, a convenience store, or throw into a shopping cart without thinking twice. Drake’s Ring Dings and Hostess Ding Dongs fall right into that category. They are two of the most recognizable chocolate snack cakes ever made, and for most people, they are interchangeable. Same shape, same idea, same quick sugar fix.
For me, these are cakes I have been eating my entire life, but I realized something: I had never actually compared them side by side. This time, I wanted to do it right. Instead of grabbing a single pack at a counter, I went to the supermarket and picked up full boxes of each to make sure I was getting them as fresh as possible. The goal was simple, find out if these two nearly identical cakes are actually different when you break them down by taste, texture, and overall quality.
Visually, the differences are subtle. The Drake’s Ring Ding has a noticeably darker chocolate coating, while the Hostess Ding Dong appears lighter. They are almost identical in size, but when you hold them, the Ding Dong feels lighter. That difference becomes more noticeable once you start tasting them.
Drake’s Ring Dings
Drake’s introduced Ring Dings in 1958, making them one of the earlier entries in the mass-produced snack cake world. The cake itself is built around a rich chocolate exterior with a cream-filled center, and from the first bite, it delivers exactly what you expect from a classic snack cake.
The texture is dense in a good way, giving it a fuller, more satisfying bite. The chocolate coating has a deeper flavor, and the cream filling brings a strong sweetness that balances everything out. It feels substantial, and the overall experience leans toward a richer, more indulgent cake. Compared with the broader world of snack cakes, this one holds its own easily.
Final score, 7 out of 10.
Hostess Ding Dongs
Hostess introduced Ding Dongs in 1967, nearly a decade after the Ring Ding, and they quickly became one of the brand’s signature products. On the surface, the concept is almost identical: chocolate cake, cream filling, and a coated exterior, but the differences come through in the details.
The first bite reveals a lighter texture. The cake is softer but does not have the same richness as the Ring Ding. The chocolate flavor is milder, and the cream filling is slightly less sweet. It is still an enjoyable snack cake, and on its own, it delivers a solid experience, but when placed side by side with the Ring Ding, it feels like it is missing some of that depth and intensity.
Final score, 6.5 out of 10.
Final Verdict
This matchup comes down to richness versus lightness. Both cakes deliver what they are supposed to, but the Drake’s Ring Ding stands out for its deeper chocolate flavor, more satisfying texture, and stronger overall presence. The Hostess Ding Dong is still a very good snack cake, but in this head-to-head comparison, it falls just short. As you can see in the video below, I really enjoyed the Ring Ding much more than the Ding Dong.
Drake’s Ring Dings take the win.
