McDonald’s vs Everyone Else: Ranking The Best Fast Food Fries

Last Updated on October 17, 2025 by Brian Kachejian

Let me confess something. I’ve driven an extra 15 minutes past three perfectly good fast food spots just to get my hands on my favorite fries. I’ve eaten them cold from the bag the next morning. I’ve defended my french fry opinions in heated debates with friends that nearly ended relationships. My love for the perfect french fry borders on obsession, and I’m not even a little bit ashamed of it.

Here at RockingFoodie.com, my fellow food writers and I recently found ourselves in yet another passionate french fry argument over lunch. One insisted Five Guys reigned supreme while another wouldn’t shut up about Wendy’s sea salt makeover. That’s when it hit me: we needed to settle this once and for all with a proper, methodical taste test.

So we embarked on a glorious, potato filled week, hitting every major chain, sampling their fries at different times of day, evaluating them when fresh and after the dreaded 15 minute car ride. We considered everything: crispiness, interior texture, potato flavor, salt level, oil quality, and that indefinable quality that makes you reach for just one more when you’re already stuffed.

Our waistlines suffered. Our arteries protested. But our souls? Completely satisfied. Because everyone deserves to know where to find the absolute best fast food french fry when the craving hits. So without further ado, here’s our completely subjective yet passionately defended ranking of America’s top ten fast food fries. Feel free to fight me in the comments!

10. Burger King

Burger King’s fries have undergone multiple makeovers over the years, and while their current iteration is an improvement from past versions, they still land at the bottom of our list. These medium cut fries feature a light, almost translucent exterior with a fluffy interior. The problem? They cool quickly and become limp faster than their competitors.

What makes them unique is their attempt at a battered coating that’s supposed to keep them crispy longer. Unfortunately, this often results in an artificial taste that masks the potato flavor. When fresh, they’re decent, with a slight sweetness and a hint of salt, but their inconsistency and rapid decline into sogginess pushes them to the bottom position.

9. Chick-fil-A

Chick-fil-A’s waffle fries bring a distinct shape to our countdown that sets them apart visually from every other contender. These thick cut, golden brown latticed potatoes offer more surface area than traditional fries, which should theoretically mean more crispiness.

While they get points for their unique appearance and generous size, the execution doesn’t always deliver on their potential. The waffle pattern creates an interesting texture, but the fries often lack the crucial crispness on the exterior while being slightly undercooked inside. Their mild potato flavor is pleasant but unmemorable, and they tend to need the boost of Chick-fil-A’s signature sauces to truly shine. I mean how can a place with such great chicken, deliver such mediocre fries?

8. Sonic Drive In

Sonic’s fries deserve recognition for their distinctive texture. These thinner cut fries have a crispy exterior that somehow maintains a pillowy interior. They have a brighter, more yellow appearance than many competitors, suggesting a different frying technique or oil.

What sets them apart is their slightly sweet flavor profile and the way they’re served. Often piping hot in a bag, retaining heat longer than many others. Their light dusting of salt and subtle natural potato sweetness make them enjoyable, but they lack the depth of flavor that would push them into the upper echelon of fast food fries.

7. Popeyes

Popeyes may be renowned for their chicken, but their Cajun fries deserve attention too. These medium cut, slightly irregular fries are coated in a distinctive orange tinted seasoning that immediately sets them apart visually.

Their signature Cajun seasoning blend delivers a peppery kick with notes of paprika, garlic, and a hint of cayenne heat that builds as you eat them. The actual potato has a hearty, substantial quality, though sometimes they can be undercooked in the center. The bold flavoring is what makes these fries special, but they lose points for inconsistency and occasionally being too aggressively seasoned.

6. KFC

KFC’s Secret Recipe Fries are relatively new to the scene, replacing their wedges a few years back. These thick cut, skin on fries feature a light coating of the chain’s signature 11 herbs and spices, giving them a distinctive appearance with visible speckles of seasoning.

The fries deliver a surprising depth of flavor with subtle notes of black pepper, thyme, and other spices that complement rather than overwhelm the potato taste. They have a satisfying crunch that gives way to a fluffy interior. While the seasoning is their standout quality, they sometimes suffer from uneven cooking and portion inconsistency, keeping them from ranking higher.

5. Shake Shack

Shake Shack’s crinkle cut fries are instantly recognizable with their deep ridges and pale golden color. These thicker fries offer a substantial bite with a crispy exterior and a perfectly fluffy interior that maintains its temperature longer than most competitors.

What makes them special is their clean, pronounced potato flavor. These taste distinctly like real potatoes, not just a vehicle for salt and oil. Their crinkle cut design maximizes both the crispy surface area and the fluffy interior. While they’re simple, seasoned with just salt, their excellent execution of potato fundamentals earns them this solid mid list placement.

4. Arby’s Curly Fries

The only specialty cut fry to make our top ten, Arby’s Curly Fries are in a category of their own. These spiral shaped delights feature a distinctive orange hued coating packed with a secret blend of spices including paprika, onion, garlic, and a hint of cayenne.

The unique corkscrew shape creates varying textures throughout each fry, with some parts ultra crispy and others maintaining a tender bite. Their seasoning delivers a satisfying savory punch that lingers pleasantly after each bite. The playful shape and bold flavor make them instantly memorable, though they lose points for occasional sogginess and the tendency for smaller pieces to become overly crunchy.

3. Five Guys

Five Guys takes a dramatically different approach to fries, and it pays off tremendously. These hand cut, skin on potatoes are fried in peanut oil, creating a distinctive flavor profile you can’t find anywhere else. The fries arrive in generous portions, often overflowing their containers in the chain’s signature brown paper bags.

What makes them special is their authenticity. These taste like potatoes first, with a rich, earthy flavor that’s enhanced rather than masked by the peanut oil. The skin on approach adds texture and rustic charm. Each fry offers a range of experiences from golden crisp edges to tender centers. While some find them greasier than other options, that’s part of their homestyle appeal, and their consistent quality earns them this high ranking.

2. Wendy’s

Wendy’s natural cut fries with sea salt claim our runner up position with their perfectly executed balance of texture and flavor. These skin on, medium thickness fries have a distinctive square cut end that mirrors the chain’s famous burger shape.

Their frying technique creates a remarkably crisp exterior while maintaining a fluffy, mashed potato like interior that few competitors can match. The sea salt adds a clean, mineral quality that enhances the natural potato flavor without overwhelming it. What truly sets them apart is their consistency. Wendy’s fries rarely disappoint, whether you’re dining in or taking them to go. Their slight rustic quality from the skin on approach gives them authenticity while still delivering the fast food satisfaction we crave.

1. McDonald’s

Was there ever any doubt? McDonald’s fries reign supreme, setting the gold standard by which all fast food potatoes are measured. These thin cut, perfectly golden fries have achieved an almost mythical status in American food culture, and for good reason.

What makes McDonald’s fries exceptional is their impeccable consistency and the scientific precision behind their preparation. Each fry delivers the perfect balance of crispy exterior and fluffy interior, with a distinctive bend that satisfies both texturally and visually. Their secret lies partly in their proprietary blend of oils and beef flavoring that creates their unmistakable umami rich taste profile.

The light dusting of salt enhances rather than masks the potato flavor, creating an addictive quality that has kept customers coming back for generations. They maintain their temperature and texture longer than competitors, and even when they cool, they transform into a different but equally enjoyable experience. McDonald’s fries represent fast food perfection. Reliable, craveable, and impossible to replicate at home, earning them the undisputed top spot in our ranking.
