There’s something about Swiss Rolls that instantly takes you back. Whether it was grabbing a pack after school or seeing them lined up in a lunchbox, these chocolate-covered cake rolls have been a staple snack for decades. But with multiple brands on the shelves today, the question becomes simple, which one actually delivers?
That’s what led to this three-way taste test between Drake’s Yodels, Little Debbie Swiss Rolls, and Walmart’s Great Value version. One is a longtime classic, one is a nationally recognized snack brand, and one comes in as the underdog store brand. All three were tested in real time to see which one truly stands out.
The Swiss roll itself dates back to nineteenth-century European sponge cakes, later evolving into the chocolate-coated, cream-filled snack that became popular in the United States. Brands like Drake’s helped define the category with products like Yodels, while McKee Foods built Little Debbie into one of the most recognized snack brands in the country. More recently, retailers like Walmart have introduced their own versions under the Great Value label, offering lower-cost alternatives that aim to compete directly with the classics.
For this review, all three were put head to head and judged purely on taste, texture, and overall quality.
Drake’s Yodels
The first bite of Drake’s Yodels immediately reminded you why they’ve been around for so long. The texture was soft, the cream filling was rich, and the chocolate coating had that classic sweetness that defines the snack. Everything worked together the way you expect it to. This one set the standard right out of the gate and earned a perfect 10 out of 10.
Walmart Great Value Swiss Rolls
The Walmart Great Value version came in with much lower expectations, especially with its simple packaging and smaller size. But the moment you bit into it, everything changed. The chocolate and cake combination stood out right away, even if it wasn’t quite as creamy as the Yodels. The flavor had a stronger impact, and that made all the difference. This one pulled ahead with a 10.5 and took the lead in a surprising turn.
Little Debbie Swiss Rolls
Little Debbie has one of the most recognizable names in snack food, so expectations were high going in. There was more cream in this one, but the cake itself didn’t hold up. The texture and flavor just didn’t come together the way the other two did. It fell well short of the competition and finished with a 2 out of 10.
Final Results
When everything was said and done, the results were clear. In third place, Little Debbie Swiss Rolls. In second place, Drake’s Yodels, which still delivered everything you expect from a classic snack. And in a complete surprise, Walmart’s Great Value Swiss Rolls took the top spot.
It’s not often that a store brand comes out ahead in a matchup like this, but this one proved that you can’t go in with expectations. Sometimes the underdog delivers the biggest result, and in this case, it did exactly that, at a lower price point as well.
