Why Bonchon Korean Fried Chicken Is One Of Our Favorite Wings Spots

I’ve always been a big wings guy. I mean, who really isn’t. Wings are the ultimate TV food, the ultimate sports food, and really the ultimate food in many ways. Everyone loves to go out and get some wings. It’s one of the most social style foods in our modern-day culture. Wings are cheap, well maybe not always, but they’re definitely cheaper than a pricey steak or a fancy lobster roll. Going out for wings is the thing to do after work, after a game, or just for a nice quick dining-out experience. Of course, it doesn’t always have to be quick, as many sports bars showcase wings as one of the hottest items on the menu.

But what if you just want really good wings without needing a big-time dining experience, preferably you just want to pick some up and bring them home. Where can you go that delivers that perfect wings punch. There are plenty of options of course, but a new one just opened up in our neighborhood called BonChon, and it’s easily one of the most spectacular takeout places I’ve seen in many years.

Now you don’t have to take them out, they do have a small dining area that feels very much like a Chinese restaurant takeout spot. The BonChon in Centereach, the one I just went to, had about seven or eight tables. It was pretty spacious, nothing fancy, but comfortable. But in the end this review is all about the wings and how they taste, and I’m really happy to say that hands down, BonChon serves some of the best wings I’ve had in years. Here’s why.

What separates Bonchon from all the wing places I’ve gone to is the size of their wings. These are the largest wings I have ever purchased, and just by their sheer size, you get your money’s worth instantly. What increases their wing size is that they’re double-battered, so it’s an extra coating on each piece. Like other wing places, it’s a combination of wings and drumsticks, but they actually let you choose exactly what you want. You can get all wings, all drumsticks, or a combo of wings and drums, which is what I did with seven pieces.

There are many different flavors to choose from, however, since this is a Korean-style BBQ wings joint, I went with the Korean BBQ sauce. Definitely a good decision, their sauce is outstanding. The wings are made fresh right when you order them and they do not disappoint. They’re not soggy, they’re very crunchy, and so sweet tasting. These are some of the best wings I have ever had. Of course, wings orders usually come with at least one side, and the side I highly recommend is kimchi. Kimchi is made of fermented vegetables, most often cabbage, salted and seasoned with a mixed blend of spices incuding salty, sour, and spicy, with that classic Korean vibe. I’m really glad I picked it as a side.

If kimchi isn’t your thing or you want something different, they have other sides like seasoned fries or crispy coleslaw. By the time I was done with the wings and kimchi, I was pretty stuffed. But this place is friendly, and the owner convinced me to try the Korean Donuts, and I can’t tell you how happy I was he suggested it. Korean Donuts are kind of like fair-style fried dough, not as heavy as something from a pizzeria, and not circular like a standard donut. They’re more like long pretzel sticks, coated in sugar, soft and fluffy inside with cream filling. The white dipping sauce they come with is to die for.

Bonchon turns out to be one of the best places I have gone to for wings in a long time. Not only was the price right, the food was completely fresh and fast. The staff was super friendly, and even though they’ve only got a small dining area inside the Centereach Mall location, it’s comfortable and clean. This is definitely my new go-to spot for wings, whether I’m picking up or hanging out. And I took some home to my son, and he devoured them faster than you can say “Popeye.”

Bonchon in Centereach is located inside the Centereach Mall at 13 Centereach Mall, Centereach, NY 11720, and it’s their first Suffolk County location. They opened March 26, 2025, in the space that used to sit Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. They’re open from 11 AM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and until 10 PM on Friday and Saturday. This is a place I highly recommend. It’s my writing that has convinced you, then check out the video I made while I was there.
