Which Peanut Butter Is Best?
Skippy vs Jif vs Peter Pan vs Wegmans Taste Test
Peanut butter is one of those foods that most people always seem to have somewhere in the kitchen. It ends up on sandwiches, toast, crackers, and sometimes it is simply eaten right off the spoon. I tend to shamelessly do that late at night. But when you stand in the peanut butter aisle at the supermarket, the number of choices can make it surprisingly difficult to decide which jar to buy. Some brands cost nearly twice as much as others, which raises a simple question. Does the more expensive peanut butter actually taste better?
That question inspired this taste test. I picked up four different peanut butter brands at the supermarket and compared them side by side to see which one really delivers the best flavor. The lineup included three well-known national brands, along with a store-brand option, to see how a budget jar would stack up against the bigger names.
The four peanut butters included in this comparison were Skippy, Jif, Peter Pan, and Wegmans store brand. Each jar was brand new and sealed before the test began. The goal was simple. Taste them one by one and rank them strictly based on flavor, texture, and overall peanut butter experience.
The Peanut Butter Brands Tested
Here are the four brands that went head to head in this taste test.
Wegmans Creamy Peanut Butter
18 oz jar
$1.99
Peter Pan Creamy Peanut Butter
16.3 oz jar
$2.99
Skippy Creamy Peanut Butter
16.3 oz jar
$3.19
Jif Creamy Peanut Butter
16 oz jar
$3.39
The Wegmans jar was clearly the least expensive option in the group. Jif was the most expensive. Skippy and Peter Pan landed right in the middle of the price range.
How the Taste Test Worked
To keep the comparison fair, each peanut butter was tasted with a separate spoon. All four jars were opened on camera, so there was no chance of mixing brands beforehand. The peanut butter was tasted straight from the spoon with no bread, crackers, or added ingredients. This allowed the flavor and texture of each brand to stand completely on its own. Instead of focusing only on peanut flavor, three key factors were considered during the tasting.
Texture, Sweetness and Overall peanut butter flavor
Those three elements quickly showed that the jars on the shelf are not all the same.
Jif Peanut Butter
The first jar opened for the taste test was Jif.
Right away, the flavor delivered exactly what most people expect from classic peanut butter. It had a rich peanut taste with a balanced sweetness. The texture was smooth and creamy, and it was easy to scoop.
Overall, it was very good peanut butter and set a strong starting point for the rest of the comparison.
Skippy Peanut Butter
Next up was Skippy.
The first thing that stood out immediately was the texture. Skippy felt noticeably softer and smoother than the Jif. It had a very creamy consistency and spread easily on the spoon.
Flavor-wise, it leaned slightly sweeter than Jif but still maintained a strong peanut butter taste. The smooth texture combined with the sweetness made a strong impression.
Wegmans Creamy Peanut Butter
The third peanut butter tested was the Wegmans store brand.
The texture was noticeably thicker and less creamy than the first two brands. Scooping it required a bit more effort.
In terms of flavor, it was somewhat bland compared to the others. It was not terrible, especially considering the price, but it lacked the richer peanut flavor delivered by the name brands.
Peter Pan Peanut Butter
The final jar opened for the taste test was Peter Pan.
The texture was smooth and creamy, similar to the other national brands. However the flavor profile was where it struggled.
While it had a certain sweetness, the peanut flavor itself felt weaker than expected. Compared with the others, it simply did not deliver the same bold peanut butter taste.
Final Peanut Butter Rankings
After tasting all four brands side by side, the results became clear.
Fourth Place
Peter Pan
Third Place
Wegmans Creamy Peanut Butter
Second Place
Jif
First Place
Skippy
Skippy took the top spot thanks to its extremely smooth texture and balanced sweetness. It delivered the most enjoyable peanut butter flavor of the four brands.
Jif finished a close second and proved to be a very strong contender. Wegmans offered a decent budget option but lacked the flavor depth of the name brands. Peter Pan finished last due to its weaker peanut flavor.
The Takeaway
Price does not always determine taste, but in this particular comparison, the higher-priced brands clearly delivered stronger flavor and better texture.
Skippy walked away with the crown in this peanut butter taste test, which may explain why it has remained a staple in so many kitchens for decades.
