Sometimes an article review takes a more significant turn than it was ever meant to. I initially set out to review Little Vincent’s Pizza, but as I was thinking about the review before I drove over, the one thing that kept popping into my mind was just how small a Little Vincent’s slice is. I have always been a fan of Little Vincent’s Pizza. I have been going there for over fifty years, long before it became as famous as it is now, long before the cold cheese slice, back in the days when Vincent Monaco, who opened the place, could be found there every day behind the counter, making the pizza.
As I was thinking about how I was going to handle this review, the thought of the small slice kept popping into my head. When you are creating a video, it is challenging to show the size of a slice because there is nothing to compare it to. So I thought, why not stop at one of my other favorite pizzerias, buy a slice, and bring it over to Little Vincent’s so I could compare the size. Of course, that led to the thought that I could not just compare the sizes of the slices, I had to compare the taste of the slices as well, and this is where this review took an unexpected turn.
I still have yet to anoint Ciro’s as my favorite pizzeria on Long Island, but for a very long time it has been right up there in the top three. A new pizzeria called Montefiato has snuck into that top three lately, so the top three is getting pretty crowded. Additionally, I kind of feel that Ciro’s has slipped a little bit lately. I do not know what it is, but there is something about Ciro’s that just is not the same anymore, and it is very recent, let me tell you that. Nonetheless, this review is really supposed to be all about Little Vincent’s, but Ciro’s just keeps creeping in.
I visited Little Vincent’s at about one o’clock in the afternoon, not quite lunchtime but very close, and probably lunchtime for a lot of people anyway. It was a Monday, so they were not really that busy. There were no lines, not like those viral pizzerias in the city lately, where you wait an hour and a half to get a slice that is not even half good in the first place. At Little Vincent’s most people are in and out very quickly. They know what they are doing. Are they the most friendly place? Not really. The guy behind the counter looked right through me, did not even look at me. It is all pretty much on autopilot with those guys, but I guess you cannot blame them. They are serving the public, and the public can be pretty nasty sometimes.
I was expecting the slice to be a little more expensive than it was. It was only three dollars and fifty cents. I know that because they do not take credit cards. It is funny how you do not really know what anything costs anymore when you use credit cards, but when you use cash you know exactly what it costs. I ordered a regular slice and a cold cheese slice. I walked across the street to the parking lot, hoping not to get hit by a car racing down Portion Road. I sat down in my car and began getting ready to do the review.
To compare the two slices, I had to pull the cold cheese slice out of the Little Vincent’s box. I then popped Ciro’s slice right next to Little Vincent’s slice in the box, and as you can see in the video below, there was no comparison. Ciro’s slice was about twice the size of Little Vincent’s slice. To be fair, Ciro’s does make a huge slice, larger than most places, but in the end, Little Vincent’s slices are still smaller than most places, so you could really see a big difference here. Of course, what matters most is the taste, and this is where I was shocked.
I was expecting Ciro’s Pizza to be much better-tasting than Little Vincent’s. I have been eating at both pizzerias for many years, and in my head, I have always thought that Ciro’s had the better slice of pizza. But when I sat there, taking a bite from each slice multiple times, it became very clear that Little Vincent’s slice was much better-tasting. Sadly, it was not even close. Yes, Little Vincent’s slice was a little hotter because it was the one I had just purchased, and Ciro’s was the one I had bought about twenty minutes earlier, but you could tell. You could hear it in the crunch, taste it in the sauce, feel it in the texture of the crust. Everything about Little Vincent’s was far superior to Ciro’s, and that made me really sad because I love Ciro’s Pizza.
So in the end, Little Vincent’s comes out the winner. In the video below, I also reviewed their cold cheese slice. You might find that part of the video pretty interesting.
