There are days when you head out to do a food review, and then there are days when you know right from the start you’re in for something different. Pulling into Waltess Estates Park in Lake Ronkonkoma felt like one of those days. The setup could not have been easier. Plenty of parking, a small neighborhood park with a playground, picnic tables set up just right, and that spring-like day that makes you want to sit down, take your time, and enjoy the moment. I met up with my friend Ken Sanger, who suggested we try the place.

Ken and Brian
Before we even got to the full lineup, they handed us one right off the grill while they were still putting everything else together, and it set the tone immediately. It was called the Screwball, and from the first bite, I knew we were in for something special. This thing came loaded with grilled peppers and onions, their signature Hustler sauce, jalapeño crisps, and then the ingredient that completely stopped me in my tracks, warm peanut butter. I actually turned to Ken and said, “Is that peanut butter?” and he just smiled and said, “Yep.” (You can watch that moment in the video below.)
Now think about that for a second, peanut butter on a hot dog, it sounds crazy, but it worked. It didn’t just work; it hit in a way that made you stop and take notice. The flavors came together in a way you wouldn’t expect, and it felt like a home run on the first pitch of the game, a bold opening that told us right away this was going to be a completely different kind of food experience.
Hot Dog Hustler is exactly what the name suggests, but it is also more than that. This is a true community food truck. The people working inside were incredibly friendly, the kind of people who make you feel welcome before you even place your order. That matters. It adds to everything. And in a town like Lake Ronkonkoma, it fits perfectly. This is a hard-working, middle-class community where people understand value, respect, and treating others right. I’ve always had a connection to this area. Years ago, when I was growing up in the city, coming out to Lake Ronkonkoma felt like going out to the country. The area has changed over the decades, but that sense of community and authenticity is still very much alive, and you feel it here.
We decided to go all in and try what I can only call the “Hot Dog Hustler experience.” This was not just one or two hot dogs. This was a full flight, multiple styles, different builds, different flavors, all laid out in front of us at a picnic table in the middle of the park. It gave us the chance to break everything down properly, to really understand what they are doing here.
We started simple, a classic hot dog with mustard. Sometimes that is the best place to begin because it tells you everything about the foundation. The bun was steamed, soft but holding together, and the hot dog itself had that clean, pure flavor you want. Nothing to hide behind, nothing to distract you. Just a good, solid hot dog done right. From there, we moved on to variations with sauerkraut, cheese, onions, and peppers, and right away the toppings began to show their importance. A hot dog is only as good as what you put on it, and here, the toppings were not an afterthought. There was sweetness, there was seasoning, there was a balance that made each bite feel complete.
Then we stepped into their signature territory with what they call the Hustler. This one came loaded: chips, tomatoes, onions, and their own Hustler sauce. The first bite hit like something completely different. It had that nacho, taco-style flavor profile, almost like you were biting into a fully loaded snack, but built on a hot dog. It was creative, it was bold, and it worked. The hot dogs themselves were thick, fresh, and substantial, and you could feel the value immediately. This was not a small, throwaway item; this was something you could come back for again and again.
The chili dog took things in another direction, and for me, this was where nostalgia kicked in. Chili, cheese, onions, and crispy onions layered on top, and from the first bite, it brought that ballpark feeling right to the table. The chili had a strong, balanced flavor, not overpowering, just right, and when combined with the onions, it created that moment where you take a bite and immediately know you have something special. It was memorable, the kind of hot dog that stays with you.
We closed it out with the Chicago dog, and this one made a statement. Loaded with onions, tomatoes, relish, celery salt, and that signature pickle, it delivered exactly what you want from a Chicago-style build. Every ingredient had its place, every bite had that snap of flavor, and by the end of it, this one stood out as a favorite. It had that perfect balance of freshness and seasoning that defines the style.
Sitting there at that picnic table, going through all of these, it became clear that this was not about picking one winner. This was about the full experience. The variety, the quality, the setting, the friendliness, everything came together. This is the kind of place where you can come back multiple times and have a completely different experience each visit, depending on what you order.
Hot Dog Hustler is located at Waltess Estates Park, 255 Ronkonkoma Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma, and it fits the location perfectly. Easy to get to, easy to park, and a great place to sit down and enjoy your food without feeling rushed. After going through all seven hot dogs, breaking them down one by one, and taking in everything around us, there was only one way to rate them. The Hot Dog Hustler experience earns a ten out of ten.
I went out to Lake Ronkonkoma and filmed this one the way it happened, sitting right there at a picnic table in the park with the food coming straight from the truck. No setup, no second takes, just real reactions as we worked our way through all seven hot dogs. Click on the video below and watch it all unfold in real time.
