Every generation ends up with its own snack, the one everyone talks about, the one you see everywhere, the one you start hearing about so much that you finally say, all right, what is going on? That’s where I was with Takis. You see the bright bags, you hear the hype, you watch younger people grabbing them like they’re the greatest thing ever made, and if you’re like me, you’re standing there thinking, what do these actually taste like.
Takis started in Mexico in 1999 as Taquis before being renamed Takis in 2004. The brand is made by Barcel, part of Grupo Bimbo, and entered the United States in 2001. What makes them different right away is the shape; these are rolled tortilla snacks, almost like little taquitos, and they’re loaded with seasoning. Over the years, they’ve built a reputation for bold flavor, especially with Fuego, the chili-and-lime variety introduced in 2006, which is known as the hottest of the bunch. They’ve also expanded into a wide range of flavors, including non-spicy options, but the brand’s identity is still built around intensity.
So I finally jumped in. I didn’t just grab one bag; I picked up five different flavors because if I’m going to do this, I’m doing it right. And I’ll tell you right now, I was impressed. The first thing that hit me was how much flavor these things have. The second was the crunch. And yeah, I’m still calling them chips, even though they don’t really look like chips.
#5 – Intense Nacho
I love the nacho flavor. It’s the first non-spicy Takis flavor, and you can tell right away there’s no heat at all. It’s got that cheesy, almost Frito-style taste, and it’s good, but compared to the others, it just didn’t hit as hard. I like spice, but I don’t like suffering, and this one definitely takes the suffering out of it, but it also takes away some of that edge that makes these things stand out.
#4 – Fuego
This is the one everybody knows, chili and lime, and yeah, right away, that’s a tasty chip. The heat is there, no question, and you get that citrus kick behind it. It’s bold, it’s aggressive, and I liked it a lot. This one sets the tone. You take a bite of this and you immediately understand what this brand is about. It might also help to have a bottle of water close by. Just like I had in the video.
#3 – Buckin’ Ranch
I love that name, Buckin’ Ranch. And this one goes in a completely different direction. No heat, just a really rich ranch flavor. And I’ve got to say, this surprised me. It’s smooth, it’s full, and it doesn’t need the spice to stand out. I liked this one a lot more than I expected to. And, I can’t stop eating them because they go down so easily. What is in these chips that makes them so highly addictive?
#2 – Blue Heat
Now the word “heat” had me a little nervous going in, but this one was interesting. It’s spicy, but not as intense as Fuego, and there’s almost a little lime thing going on in there. It’s really balanced. I found myself liking this one more and more with each bite. This one’s really good.
#1 – Dragon Sweet Chili
This is where it all came together for me. The second I tasted this one, I knew it would be right at the top. You get that sweet chili flavor, and it just works. Each one I tried kept getting better, and this one just sealed it. If I had to grab one bag and walk out of the store, this is the one I’m taking. No question.
By the time I got through all five, I had to laugh a little. I had seen people going crazy over these things, and now I understood why. The flavor is strong across the board, the crunch is there, and each one brings something different. If you’ve never tried Takis before and you’ve been seeing them everywhere, I’ll tell you straight, they’re worth checking out.
And yeah, if you’ve been eating these for years, you’re probably laughing at me right now. That’s fine. This old guy finally gets it.
