Tex’s Chicken & Burgers in Selden Serves Up Fried Chicken Worth Talking About

On a laid-back Saturday afternoon, I stopped by Tex’s Chicken & Burgers in Selden, New York, curious to see if all the talk about their fried chicken held up. The restaurant was clean, well-staffed, and despite not being too busy, there was a steady stream of customers—a promising sign.

Tex’s offers a wide variety of combo meals, but I decided on the No. 9: two pieces of fried chicken (you can choose spicy or regular), a side, and a biscuit. I went with a spicy chicken breast and a regular thigh, paired with french fries. Even though I had to wait a few extra minutes while they cooked the fries fresh on the spot, I was a little let down. The fries came out piping hot, but surprisingly lacked flavor. Once I added salt and ketchup, they improved, but they didn’t live up to the anticipation of being made fresh in front of me. (You can catch my full reaction in the video below.)

That said—everything changed with the chicken. The regular piece was simply outstanding. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and with a subtle sweetness in the batter that gave it a unique flavor. This wasn’t your typical fast food fried chicken—it felt more like something you’d get at a quality sit-down restaurant. Honestly, it blew away the likes of KFC and Popeyes.

Now, the spicy chicken breast was a different story. Flavor-wise, it was just as fresh and perfectly cooked as the regular piece—but the heat level? Way above my comfort zone. I do enjoy spicy food, and I eat a lot of Indian cuisine, but I always ask for mild. So maybe that tells you where I stand. Still, I powered through most of it—probably sweating off a pound in the process. But even through the spice, the quality still stood out.

The biscuit was another high point. Fluffy, fresh, and full of flavor—miles better than anything I’ve had from the bigger chains. And the price? Just over ten bucks for the combo. That’s a solid deal for a full meal with this level of quality.

Would I recommend Tex’s Chicken & Burgers? Absolutely. You can see for yourself in the video below—this is a real, honest review. I was there. I tried the food. And to top it off, I later found out the company originated in the Bronx—my hometown. That connection just made the whole experience even better.

Tex’s isn’t just another fast food place. According to their own story, the brand started with a group of friends who wanted to bring high-quality, affordable food to local neighborhoods. Since opening their first store in the Bronx, they’ve expanded across the East Coast, staying focused on fresh ingredients and supporting their communities. They’re not just serving meals—they’re giving back, which is something I really respect.

I haven’t tried the burgers yet, but that’s next on my list. Today was about the chicken—and Tex’s delivered. Just work on those fries a little, and this place is unstoppable.

Stay tuned. I’ll be back for that burger soon.
